It is Carnival time, in Poland Tłusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday) was celebrated last week, today in UK we are celebrating Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras. In Poland and some parts of the USA Tłusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday) is celebrated on the last Thursday before Lent when “pączki” (doughnuts), “faworki” (fried crispy biscuits) and other rich, often deep fried, foods are consumed. It’s equivalent of UK’s Pancake Day that takes place on the last Tuesday before Lent, day before Ash Wednesday.

Bigos – Polish Hunter’s Stew (Vegetarian Version) by Coffee & Vanilla
Bigos (hunter’s stew) is traditional Polish (but also Lithuanian, Belarussian and Ukrainian) dish made out of sour cabbage, mushrooms, prunes and different types of cooked meats and sausages and often served with mashed potatoes or bread.

Sernik (cheesecake) is one of most popular and delicious Polish cakes. It can take many forms and flavours: plain, chocolate covered, filled with berries, nuts, dried fruits, baked, chilled… There is countless number of varieties to try. Personally I’m not a big fan of chilled cheesecakes but I love baked ones, especially if they are made with chocolate or berries, or even better both at once like the one on above image.

Brukselka – brussels sprouts are very popular dish here in UK during Christmas dinner, often served while still firm and prepared with nuts, such as chestnuts, hazelnuts or walnuts and bacon. I must admit I like them much better Polish way: boiled until very soft and topped with generous amount of breadcrumbs.
